Have your say about the future of Mātai Moana

DEADLINE: Midnight April 21, 2025

A VISION

“A treasured place for restoration, living heritage and histories, where all people can connect with one another and with the unique nature, landscapes and wairua of Aotearoa New Zealand.”

The Journey so Far

In 2011, the then minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Chris Finlayson announced the establishment of a reserve at Mātai Moana for the people of Wellington and all of New Zealand. At the same time, it was announced that a reference group representing key stakeholders including local iwi, community, local body, central government and other interest groups would be formed to help decide on future use of the land.

As far as we can tell, pretty much none of that happened as far as the community was concerned.

So the Friends of the Miramar Peninsula took it upon ourselves to bring together the community bits.

To date, we have organized a number of hui surrounding what the community thinks ought to happen. You can see more about that work HERE.

We’ve also helped students of the Landscape Architecture Programme at Victoria University of Wellington to study the land and bring together more community members and groups in an effort to create ideation and aspirational designs for what a reserve might look like. You can find their work HERE.
